Kings Canyon High School proactively maintains a positive and safe environment, where students quickly become a part of the Wildcat family. In annual student surveys and parent surveys, students and parents have consistently rated the safety, culture, and climate of KCHS as exceptionally high. Kings Canyon High School has been awarded a Gold Model School award by the county of Fresno for four years in a row relative to our positive behavior and intervention supports. We follow the Wildcat way: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Caring. Each staff member on the KCHS campus is Trauma Informed Certified. Two staff members are members of the Fresno Trauma and Resiliency Network, which is a part of the California ACES connection and The Fresno Community Health Improvement Partnership (FCHIP). Trauma training is given to students each quarter. Kings Canyon High School’s “Trauma to Transcendence” approach to helping students has gained local, state, and national attention.
Students are recognized on a daily basis when they’ve earned “Wild Cat Way” tickets submitted by staff for being Respectful, Responsible, and Caring. Students who earn 90% of their credits, have 90% attendance, and do not have discipline digressions, are taken on a reward trip each quarter. These trips include Monterey Bay Aquarium, Alcatraz Island, Roller Skating, Bowling, and etc. Every quarter, teachers select their “Student of the Quarter.” These students are recognized at an all school assembly and their families are personally invited. Each year “Honor Students” are recognized at the graduation ceremony. Perfect attendance students are recognized at a quarterly Attendance Rally. When a student graduates, they are recognized over the PA system and complete their walk of fame around campus. In all of these recognition programs, students are not only recognized with certificates and medals, but they are also awarded fantastic prizes. Thanks to our community partners students receive such prizes as laptops, jewelry, electronics, gift cards, and etc.
